There was a lot of confusion in my life when I wrote this song. A considerable amount of
tough things were consuming me. I badly needed advice and everyone was eager to put their
two cents in. The question was: Who should I listen to? What voice should I follow?
I began to realize that there was only one voice that I could fully trust. I knew I had to
go to God in prayer to seek him in His Word if I was going to sort things out. I
discovered that the world is full of opinions that will drag us every which way if we will
let them. Only those who have learned to hear the voice of God will succeed in such
puzzling circumstances. It was upon this thought that I composed The Voice.
I showed it to Vanessa and she immediately identified with the lyrics. Several years ago
she had made some disastrous decisions that nearly ruined her life and the lives of many
people around her. At the time she desperately wanted to hear what Gods will was. She went
to pastors, counselors and friends for advice. Most everyone told her what she wanted to
hear. . .and what she wanted was just plain dead wrong.
The results of following these voices were devastating. Finally, with her life in
shambles, she determined that she would build a prayer life and seek the Lord daily in His
Word. She would turn her mind away from the words of those who sought to appease her
appetites and set her heart on He Lord and Savior. Slowly her head was put back into shape
and her life that Satan sought to destroy was repaired as she turned her heart back to
God.
Obviously, Vanessa was the logical choice to sing the song in Selah. And sing it she
always has with conviction in such a convincing way that audiences have always been
dramatically effected. The song is tender and personal so Vanessa sings it alone,
one-on-one with those she so desperately wants to convince. The passion in her voice is
evident in this cut.
What voices are calling out to you? What decisions are you about to make? Are they Gods
will?
Many of us behave as if the decisions of life are of little consequence. We act as if
anything can be undone. However, many decision last a lifetime. What we sow we shall reap.
Will it be bounty or hardship? All of that is determined by which voice we listen to and
who we follow. Heed the voice of God.
