"I might
not be a religious man myself but I know good music when I hear it, and this is very
good! . . . I dont think that I have ever given such high
ratings to so many songs before. But
the fact is that they are well deserved because the
music is amazing. Simply wonderful religious ballads and they
really get to your heart. . .everytime."
Fredrik Cole: Trax In Space
This inspiring praise hymn, one of the
most popular of all time, remains a tribute, not
only the faithfulness and provision of God, but Gods extraordinary use of the most
ordinary people. Thomas Chisholm was an
insurance salesman, and an unhealthy one at that. When
he was seventy-five he wrote, My income has not been large at any time due to
impaired health in the earlier years which has followed me on until now. Although I must not fail to record here the
unfailing faithfulness of a covenant-keeping God and that He has given me wonderful
displays of His providing care, for which I am filled with astonishing gratefulness.
He spent his life selling life
insurance and submitting poetry to Christian magazines.
Some were rejected, some accepted and none ever gave him much money. Yet this humble artist eventually penned some of
the greatest lyrics in hymn history and his song, Great is Thy Faithfulness,
is certain to be sung by congregations throughout the world for decades upon decades to
come. Indeed, God is faithful!
I was indeed moved by this marvelous
story as I set out to make an instrumental arrangement of this great hymn. Indeed, I can identify with Chisholm. While my health
has been very good, as an unsigned musician I well understand the dilemma of
rejection-after-rejection of our music among the elite of the industry. In fact, after Selah produced our first album,
Stop and Think About It, we sent it out to nearly a hundred record companies. Not one of them even took the time to listen to
it!
Yet God has clearly demonstrated His
faithfulness by creating a new medium through which music can be distributed throughout
the world. And, thus, through the Internet
ministry of Wigtune Company, our music is now being sung in countless churches throughout
the world. One never knows just how God will
act on our behalf. But we do know that He is
ever faithful to us. This wondrous fact gives
us ample reason to praise Him, though circumstances may go against us.
In this piece a lone cello introduces
the song as if to depict the loneliness we feel so many times in the midst of a world that
seems to ignore us. Yet soon Chisholms
wonderful message of hope in God is delicately played on guitars, soon to be joined by the
Steinway piano. It is not long until that
once lonely cello is enveloped by a host of instruments, while declaring the joyous
phrase, Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord unto me.
We pray that you are encouraged in
hope of the provision of God as you enjoy this marvelous song!
Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own Way!
Thou art the potter; I am the clay.
Mold me and make me after Thy will,
While I am waiting, yielded and still.
Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own Way!
Search me and try me, Mater today!
Whiter than snow, Lord, wash me just
now,
As in Thy presence humbly I bow.
Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own Way!
Wounded and weary, help me, I pray!
Power, all power, surely is Thine!
Touch me and heal me, Savior divine!
Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own Way!
Hold oer my being absolute sway!
Fill with Thy Spirit till all shall see
Christ only, always, living in me!

Adelaide Pollard, was forty when she unsuccessfully attempted to raise money in her
desire to go into the mission field. She
attended a prayer meeting where an older woman prayed, Lord, it doesnt matter
what you bring into our lives, just have your way with us. Later that evening the inspired Adelaide wrote
this famous hymn. The smooth acoustic guitar
followed with hot harmonies by Vanessa Dave and Laurie
encourage us to let God have His way in our lives.
Adelaide Pollard was forty when she was
trying unsuccessfully to raise support to go to Africa as a missionary. She desperately asked God why she had such a
burden for the needs of that continent when He did not provide her with the means to go. It was during this time of discouragement that
Adelaide attended a small prayer meeting where a woman prayed, Lord, it doesnt
matter what you bring into our lives, just have Your way with us.
That night she went home and read the
story of Jeremiahs visit to the potters house.
Later that evening she wrote this hymn. Perhaps,
she reasoned, my questioning of Gods will shows a flaw in my life. So God decided to break me, as the potter broke
the defective vessel, and then to mold my life again in His own pattern.
It was during a very difficult time
that this song began to make an impact in my life. At
the time I was going through a considerable amount of tough life changes that I did not
invite and neither did I want! However, they
were sitting right there in front of me declaring that they were inescapable.
The problem was not in regards to
whether-or-not they would happen. It was
inevitable that my life was going to change dramatically.
The question became: would I keep my
heart with God? It was beginning to appear to
me that when I placing my life in Gods hands may have been a mistake. To the best of my ability I had dedicated my life
to the service of Him apparently to be rewarded with the terrible mess that I now found
myself in.
One morning in church the praise team
played this song with slow, picking acoustic guitars and nice harmonies. At first I was intrigued with the music, but as
the words came forth I was convinced that I must allow god to have His way in my life. I had to trust Him for the future, knowing that
my destiny was in good hands.
A little later I got by myself to pick
out the chords for myself and I came up with this arrangement. It has been put together in a way that recreates
that moment when I was so moved by the praise hymn. It
starts off with light picking acoustic guitars as the vocals by Vanessa, Dave and Laurie
subtly enter. Instruments such as bass B3 and
light drums gradually enter in to create fill out the song as it progresses. I am sure that it will move you as it once did me.
I come to the garden alone,
While the dew is still on the roses;
And the voice I hear, falling on my
ear,
The Son of God discloses.
And He walks with me, and He talks
with me,
And He tells me I am His own,
And the joy we share as we tarry
there,
None other has ever known.
He speaks, and the sound of His voice
Is so sweet the birds hush their
singing;
And the melody that He gave to me
Within my heart is ringing.
And He walks with me, and He talks
with me,
And He tells me I am His own,
And the joy we share as we tarry
there,
None other has ever known.
Id stay in the garden with Him
Tho the night around me be
falling;
But He bids me go thru the voice of
woe,
His voice to me is calling.
And He walks with me, and He talks
with me,
And He tells me I am His own,
And the joy we share as we tarry
there,
None other has ever known.

Alone with God. . .who is ever
present. . .calling me His own. . .sharing in joy. . .with our living God.
Charles Miles attended the Philadelphia
College of Pharmacy and the University of Pennsylvania. In 1892, he
wrote his first Gospel song, List Tis Jesus Voice. It was published by the Hall-Mack Company and
Miles abandoned his career as a pharmacist. Since that time he served as
editor and manager at the Hall-Mack publishers for 37 years while producing
this favorite hymn In the Garden.. In regards to this ministry he wrote: It is as a writer of gospel
songs I am proud to be known, for in that way I may be of the most use to my Master, whom
I serve willingly although not as efficiently as is my desire.
I read
the story of the greatest morn in history:
The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, while it was yet very dark,
unto the sepulcher. Instantly, completely, there unfolded in my mind the scenes of
the garden of Joseph
.Out of the mists of the garden comes a form, halting,
hesitating, tearful, seeking, turning from side to side in bewildering amazement.
Falteringly, bearing grief in every accent, with tear-dimmed eyes, she whispers, If
thou hast borne him hence
He speaks, and the sound of His voice is so
sweet the birds hush their singing. Jesus said to her, Mary! Just one
word from his lips, and forgotten the heartaches, the long dreary hours
.all the past
blotted out in the presence of the Living Present and the Eternal Future.
This song was one of the favorites of
a dear Baptist pastor who I served under for many years - Dr. John Lavendar. This experience was during a awkward period of my
life. I came to this 100-year-old church from
a Calvary Chapel background. I had little
appreciation for hymns, nor did I have any interest at the time in any of the hymns that
he held so dear to his heart.
There were many disputes between the
two of us regarding the importance of hymns. I
was pretty stubborn then and could only see value in the contemporary music that I had
grown up with. Through the years, though, my
heart slowly melted as the great hymns of the past pressed themselves into my obstinate
life. By the time this great pastor retired,
I had learned many lessons and I owe much of my ministry today to the wisdom of this
faithful shepherd who was patient enough with me to help me through my prejudices.
Therefore, I dedicate the release of
this hymn instrumental to Dr. John, a beloved man who helped shape my future
in a way that I would have never expected.
He loved the way I would delicately
play the piano as I praised the Lord every Sunday morning, so I utilized dreamy sounds of
pianos (both acoustic and electric) along with soothing guitars and strings to create a
moving rendition of this wonderful piece of music. We
pray that this song will remind you that God is always near.
