Song Story
I can remember exactly where I was
when I wrote this song. I was living as a bachelor with a family for a few months wile I
looked for yet another roommate. While at home there was nothing much to do other than
fiddle with my guitar. The pastor of our church, Calvary Chapel, had just done a sermon on
Revelation 5. I was overwhelmed by the praise in heaven that occurred in recognition of
Christs awesome work on the cross. The entire song came to me in one evening.
This event later inspired me to undertake a life pursuit of putting as much of the Book of
Revelation to music as possible. Eventually, as I became a full-time associate pastor at
the church, I began to put together a Revelation musical that I hoped the Calvary Chapel
Praise Singers, that I lead, would eventually perform. However, the music involved in the
entire work was so vast and complex that this immediate vision never materialized.
As the years passed, though, I continued to write music, many times going to the Book of
Revelation as inspiration. Worthy Is the Lamb, though, was left tucked away deep in my
file cabinet, almost forgotten.
Eventually I formed the singing group, Selah. As the ministry of Selah progressed, be
began to sing some of the pieces from this shelved musical. With each new song learned we
began to realize how powerful the music was. We decided that I should go to work and
complete the Revelation Set (as we called it) for public performance. This is one of the
songs that I brought out of mothballs.
As it was, Worthy Is the Lamb turned out to be one of our best songs. The words of praise
that are spoken in this part of scripture are extremely potent and they envelope believers
in praise. I wrote a piano introduction to it to set the mood for scripture reading. I
consider the piano part to be the best that I have ever done.
This leads into the song which begins with a solo by Virginia. Eventually Mitch takes over
with the leads only to be joined by all in glorious praise. As the song ends Selah
joyously proclaims the words that will forever fill heaven: Worthy, worthy art Thou, Lord!
This praise song is about the exaltation of Jesus for the things He has done. We trust
that as you listen you will join us in the exaltation and adoration of your Lord and King.
