"I might
not be a religious man myself but I know good music when I hear it, and this is very
good! . . . I dont think that I have ever given such high
ratings to so many songs before. But
the fact is that they are well deserved because the
music is amazing. Simply wonderful religious ballads and they
really get to your heart. . .everytime."
Fredrik Cole: Trax In Space
Look upon me Lord,
And see my every need
Guard the way that lies before me now.
Rescue me, O Lord
Lead in every way
May Your glory always see me through the night.
My Stronghold and my Strength,
Though iniquity surrounds me.
Send forth Your light and truth to lead me,
To Your holy mountain where,
Your life forever dwells.
There I will find You, O my God.
And Ill go to the altar of the Lord, my God,
To lift my heart in praises, my joy and delight.
I will bow before the altar of the Lord, my God,
To join the choir of voices before the altar, the altar of God.
The altar of God. . .the altar of God
Why are you downcast, O my soul?
Why do troubles lie within?
Put all your hope in God alone,
For Ill yet declare His praise,
My Savior and my Lord.
For I can trust You, O my God!
And Ill go to the altar of the Lord, my God,
To lift my heart in praises, my joy and delight.
I will bow before the altar of the Lord, my God,
To join the choir of voices before the altar, the altar of God.
And Ill go to the altar of the Lord, my God,
To lift my heart in praises, my joy and delight.
I will bow before the altar of the Lord, my God,
To join the choir of voices before the altar, the altar of God.
The altar of God. . .the altar of God.

Song Story
This song came out of a prolific two
weeks when I was in the business of writing four songs simultaneously. Actually, all four
came out of one song as I continued to be inspired with melody-after-melody that became
more than that which that one song could handle. This song came out of this overflow of
musical thoughts. Vanessa loves to sing the music that I take out of the psalms, so I
decided to thumb through that portion of the Bible until I happened upon one that inspired
me. It was Psalm 43 that caught my eye.
Christians are generally shy of the notion of altars because so much of history associates
altars with the worship of pagan religions. Yet we do know that many times the heroes of
the Old Testament would erect altars to commemorate an event in which God had worked in a
special way. Altars, such as that built at the River Jordan after the Jews crossed over
into the Promised Land, would stand as constant reminders of the provision and activity of
God in His peoples behalf. (Josh 4)
Psalm 43 speaks of going to the place where God dwells before the altar of God bringing
praises to my joy and my delight. As the psalm assures us: when we are guided by Gods
light to His feet our soul no longer is troubled as we bask in the knowledge of His
provision and hope. It is then that we realize that we will yet praise Him though troubles
seek to ruin us.
As I was writing the song, Vanessa did not seem too impressed. So, before showing the
whole song to her I recorded the instrumentals in order to give her a feel for the final
product before passing judgment. I was successful and she was elated with the arrangement.
But it was months before we had time to lay the vocal tacs and by that time she had
forgotten what she had heard.
It was at the end of a long-long weekend that I asked her to lay down the vocals to the
acapella arrangement of He is Lord. The session went so good that I asked her if she
wanted to play around with The Altar of God. She said Sure!, but the whole ordeal was a
serious mistake. The key was too high, she was worn out and the tracs were not coming out
very well. So, we gave it up for the time being.
When we picked up the song again a few weeks later, Vanessa was already sick of it and,
therefore, didnt seem very enthusiastic about the project even though I lowered the key a
minor third! However, she did her job and I again laid the song aside in preference of
getting out music for the 2000 Easter season. Though I could tell Vanessa didnt like The
Altar of God, I was very confident of the song.
She was in the room a few weeks later when I opened The Altar of God back up in order to
begin work on the mix. Even as the vocal began she immediately exclaimed, I love this
song! After I finished the mix I played it for her once again and her enthusiasm for the
song grew to a feverish pitch. I am glad that I stuck with it!
Certainly, it will minister to you as well. Vanessa sings the song with a tenderness that
is inspiring and the harmonies are as smooth as silk. A piano with guitars gently caress a
soft beat that brings intensity to the powerful words of praise that were written
thousands of years ago. And as you listen we pray that you are inspired to join the choir
of voices that sound their praises at the altar of God.
