I will sing, sing unto the Lord,
I will sing unto the Lord.
Sing unto the Lord, for He hath dealt so bountifully with me.
Sing unto the Lord!
I will praise Your Name and lift my hands,
I will praise Your Name and lift my hands.
Sing unto the Lord, for He hath dealt so bountifully with me.
Sing unto the Lord.

"Really Great!" (TraxInSpace)This praise song originally released by Maranatha! Music on the album "Let All Who Hath Breath Praise the Lord" quotes last verse of Psalm 13. David laments over the fact that his enemies continue to triumph over him. However, he his lifted to the escalation of praise, singing that God has dealt bountifully with him! The Calvary Chapel Praise Singers fill this song with great inter-twining melodies that express this jubilation as God is exalted on high.
"Great vocal arrangements with singing in different scales and amazing melodies consisting of flutes and pianos. . .Really Great!" Fredrik Cole: Trax In Space
Song Story
This is the first praise song that I ever wrote. Actually, I composed music to all of
Psalm 13 during the late 70s while touring the West Coast with the ministry band Jedediah.
The band loved the song and we incorporated it into our set. Months later, though, the
band broke up (as they usually do). It was not long after that when I moved to Bakersfield
to minister at Calvary Chapel.
On the first Sunday that I attended Calvary the pastor asked if I could lead in the song
service. I consented, though I really did not know any praise songs very well. I remember
completely botching the lyrics to several of them, only to be rescued by the congregation.
Nonetheless, the pastor instantly declared me as their music minister. Having been awarded
this generous distinction (after that awful performance) I decided that I might as well
move to Bakersfield.
I was not ministering there long before I introduced the congregation to Sing Unto the
Lord. I did not teach them the entire psalm because I figured it was too complex. The
people enthusiastically received it and it has been sung there to this day.
It was so popular that it was only natural to include it on our praise album that was
recorded by our Calvary Chapel Praise Singers and released by Maranatha! Music. Originally
the song had drums in it but we found that irregularities in the original recording made
it so that we could not lay tracs of the drum parts. So, we canned the drums and used a
strumming acoustic guitar to drive the song. At one juncture our engineer, Jim Shaw, had
an interesting idea. This album was recorded in an old recording studio that had a huge
room for a reverb chamber. Jim sent me into the room with a large drum and told be to beat
on it in time. It ended out producing a very remarkable effect midway in the song.
The vocals of the piece are sung by the praise singers as the flute, played by Wendy,
intertwines around the melody. In the background the piano adds to the austerity of the
trac while the vocalists each divide into individual melodies that fit together like a
glove.
The song was recorded in the early eighties and I had not heard the it for a while. In
determining which cuts to release as mp3s I listened to this one. By the end of the song I
was moved to tears. The lyrics proclaim that, in spite of the troubles that face us, I
will sing unto the Lord, for He Hath dealt bountifully with me. It is a grand statement of
faith to determine to praise God though times are rough. But God always provides. This is
just cause for joyful tears.
