Song Story
The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the single historical event that separates
Christianity from all other faiths. No other religion can produce the evidence that proves
they serve a living God. Yet, because Christ was crucified and lifted up to glory,
believers can glorify Christ who is alive and lives in them. Without the resurrection
Christianity fails to be relevant. For without this single historical miracle there is no
forgiveness of sin, eternal life or abundant life on earth. Yet Christ lives in glory.
Lift Him Up proclaims this fact and calls on the worshipper to glorify Jesus because He
was risen from the dead.
Though this message is generally reserved for Easter, it stands as the foundation of the
Christian faith. Therefore, I decided to write a praise song that calls on Christians to
acknowledge the resurrection of Christ every day. It was designed as an Easter song that
could be utilized in congregational praise all year round.
When I first played the song for Vanessa she was immediately enthused. At once we huddled
around the piano and began to sing it as a duet. A week or so later, when we showed it to
Selah, they were so excited about the duet that we decided to leave the parts that Vanessa
and I wrote intact. Virginia and Mitch added some very nice harmonies to the chorus and
the second verse that gave those parts needed punch. The part that is especially cool is
when the group sings about angels joining in the chorus of praise. It is exhilarating.
The Bruce Hornsby style piano is the centerpiece of the instrumentals. However, I wanted
some dynamic lead guitar to fill things out. On-and-off I had ministered with Odie
Crabtree, one of the best lead guitarists in Bakersfield. His guitar had added a lot to an
earlier project that I produced at Calvary Chapel, so I called him up once again.
Odie does not just play guitar. He composes on it. Therefore, every lead that he puts down
has been meticulously prepared down to the tinniest harmonic. This produces great parts,
but when you get Odie in the studio he costs you a lot of money. Hell play a part and
everyone will think it is just fine. But by the look on his face you can tell that it is
not. No, you got to run the take one again because there was some little iota that he
didnt get just right. The experience is frustrating for all, but the results are always
tremendous. His parts on this cut attest to this fact.
We hope that you will use this song in your daily worship. The resurrection of Christ is
something that we daily live in and benefit from. This wonderful miracle is the major
reason why we can give thanksgiving and praise to Him.
