A driving rhythm guitar kicks off this powerful rock song that features an awesome electric slide guitar lead over a slamming rhythm section. A rock-and-roll piano rounds out a B3 electric organ solo that breaks out of the hot vocals that convince us that it is better to live now with Jesus than to dwell in the problems of the past.
Song Story
Old rock and roll is the best way to describe this song. This song was written during a time when I was hearing a lot from Christians who insisted that they were not accountable for their actions. Rather, they sought to blame their present sinful circumstances on the past experiences (particularly those with their parents), hoping that some sort of magical formula would set them free.
It was then that I began thinking about the Children of Israel – how they despised the promises that God had for them in the future and desired to return to Egypt, the place of slavery, torture and human misery. Because of the dangers that awaited in the Promise Land they dreaded their future in God more than they despised the wretchedness of their past. (Numbers 14) It is interesting to see how fearful people are so willing to delve into misery rather than relishing in the abundance that God has for them.
Jesus has forgiven and forgotten the past of those whom He has redeemed. Why should they, in turn dwell on that which only destroys? Successful living in Christ is built upon faith, and that faith trusts, believes and moves on towards righteousness in spite of any apparent obstacle. This faith takes personal accountability for sin, accepts Christ’s forgiveness for sin and seeks righteousness. Putting the blame on others while dwelling in the past is not a part of true Christian behavior.
Though, this song is very simple musically, the truth it conveys is exceptionally
profound! Featuring a duet between Don and Vanessa, it kicks off right away with a solid
Rock and Roll beat with a driving rhythm guitar. Immediately a slide guitar powers out in
true ‘60s fashion. Later in the song, the B3 organ solo absolutely wails as it trades
off with a rock piano lead. All of this combines to drive the message home that that it is
better to turn your back to the past and hold to His promises.
